Is the Internet Craze Real?

Last week, having discussed whether weather reports should be taken more seriously, I was confronted with a wide range of across-the-spectrum answers. These were answers that ranged immensely in the scope they proposed and the time period over which they would be implemented.

As a result, I wanted to know from all of you viewers whether your behaviour changes online? Would you have given me a different answer if we were talking face-to-face about these issues?

Video Game Drowns Two More People Off Al Khan Beach

Mansoor Mamnoon, Staff Reporter

Friday, April 22, 2022

Sharjah- Yesterday evening, two men drowned in the Arabian Gulf on Al Khan beach while playing a banned game that has already killed three others in the UAE. The body of the two men has been recovered, with the spectacled, shorter one clutching a switched off mobile phone in his hand, while the taller man, believed to be his friend, only had a wallet in his pocket for identification purposes.

The two men were the latest victims of the mobile game “Addictive Ahoy!”, a platform that allows people from all over the world to send anonymous dares to each other and then live-stream their attempts to the entire world. Already banned in 35 countries across the world, the game has caused the death of at least 110 people worldwide, who live-streamed their ill-fated attempts to the world and in the process recorded their often-gruesome deaths. As of the time of printing, it is not clear what these two men were planning to do, but the police say this will soon be revealed after studying the web browsing history of the two men.

Jassy de Silva, a shopkeeper near Al Khan beach who was reportedly one of the last people to encounter the men recollected, “The two men wanted to buy some clay and liquid glue, and they had been recording the entire session on some device. When I asked them about their intentions, they cockily smiled at the camera, looked at me arrogantly and remained evasive.” Jassy further remembers that the two men immediately started chattering loudly together upon receiving the materials and immediately rushed out into the sea.

Anjali Simbedi wife of Rakesh Simbedi, one of the deceased men reports inconsolably, “Rakesh and Roshan were best friends. Recently, the two seemed very excited over a recent development. Knowing how stupid he can be at times, I tried to extract his intentions, but to no use.” Anjali further explained, “Rakesh had grown incredibly restless and short-termed over the past few days and constantly mentioned some words like ‘viewers’ in his sleep.” One of Roshan’s workmates, who wished to remain anonymous confirmed that Roshan exhibited the same symptoms in the past few days.

A government source has informed the public of an inquiry to be conducted into the matter. The spokesperson also mentioned that mobile phone companies du and Etisalat have been contacted and together with engineers at Apple and Google, they are working on an update that would make it impossible for such games to be downloaded at all on any digital device.

Inspector Ashfaq Ahmed cautions the public, “The story of these two new men is a perfect embodiment of the craziness over the internet that some people exhibit; preliminary reports such that the men aimed to record their construction of a gigantic sandcastle underwater.” The Inspector hints at further fines and regulations being imposed with current ones to discourage people from downloading such malevolent games on their devices again in the future.
