Slippery Sludge Steamrolls Bus’ Systems As It Rams Into Water Tanker

Mansoor Mamnoon, Staff Reporter

Friday, April 8, 2022

Sharjah- A school bus collided with a tanker truck full of water yesterday evening at Jashan Road, that resulted in three students becoming comatose and a further five including the bus conductor suffering from deep lacerations.

The bus-driver drove haphazardly throughout, despite the torrential rain that has made roads into a slippery conveyor belt. As the bus driver noticed the tanker pulling up to a stop ahead, he gushed down onto the brakes to avert disaster; disaster which resulted in the complete obliteration of the front of the bus and the electronic register systems at the back of the tanker in damages that could amount to an excess of AED 10,000. That further inspection of the bus revealed an unsuitable tyre pressure and that the braking system displayed crude and jagged edges, meant that the attending officers immediately took in the bus-driver for further questioning.

Jayant Yadav, a pupil onboard the bus shuddered as he recollected the incident, “Uncle (the bus driver) had been really mad at the noise we were making in the rain and had already warned us once.” Jayant continued, “When the bus stopped, I was propelled out of my seat onto the floor; unfortunately for little Minnie though, her head struck the ceiling and…and….” After an inconsolable Jayant was carried away, a pupil elaborated to us that Minnie had struck her head to the ceiling and suffered a brain haemorrhage as a result.

One of the pedestrians on the road reported, “I remember hearing a sharp screech of brakes and a loud peel of shouts-When I turned, I saw a school-bus half-destroyed; its crushed headlights gleamed in the deluge of rain, and it reminded me of a poorly bred bulldog.” The pedestrian, who wished to remain anonymous, further explained how the police were called immediately and that a cursory check of the bus was followed by the screeching of police car sirens, as the bus-driver was handcuffed and carried away.

Preliminary reports from the police indicate that the bus driver, who initially remained evasive, had compensated for his salary cuts by compromising on the maintenance and upkeep of the bus. As a result, school officials have immediately suspended him from the payroll, although a school official declined to comment on the revelation. An alternate aspect on attempted suicide by the bus driver is also being investigated.

Inspector Ashfaq Ahmed cautions citizens and residents, “Rainy weather is often accompanied by a relentless flow of accidents all over the country. Stay cautious when driving in such weather and upkeep your vehicles in strict line with official regulations.” The Inspector also hinted at further regulations and fines in the pipeline, aimed at improving the upkeep of vehicles and making roads safer for the future.

Do you think having had more road regulations and increased surveillance of buses would have helped? Would Minnie not have died then? I eagerly await your responses on the right!
